(Goes With RSK Lesson 4)
When God was creating the world—the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy!
Which creates a bit of a problem for a writer of lessons which go chronologically through the Scriptures. ☺
When should we ‘talk’ about angels, and how much should we say?
Why a special lesson on the subject? And why here?
Well, here’s a few good reasons:
- We know they were there, on the scene, before, during, and after Genesis 1. [So, we’re basically ‘getting them on the scene’—introducing the main characters—before the Story begins.]
- As the Story continues, God’s mighty messengers will be showing up, going where God sends them, doing what He tells them to do. So it’s good for our kids to know who they are and be on the look-out for them.
- They are part of all that God created.
- Let’s face it: Even young kids may already have wrong ideas about angels. It’s probably best to do some world-view course correction before we get too far along in the story.
- And besides: Learning that God has an unnumbered angelic host at His command expands our kids’ view of the God we rightly worship.
Of course, we don’t know how long before Genesis 1:1 God created these amazing beings.1 It was before the clock of our universe began, so ‘how long before’ can’t be answered. But it’s awesome to think of them already on the cosmic scene, singing and shouting for joy as God creates the heavens and the earth. And then, of course, we hear them again at the end of our Book: A mighty chorus, too many to count, shouting out praises to the God who decided to do all of this, just because He wanted to.
All too soon, we will have to talk about Lucifer and those who followed him. But for now—in the chronology of things—everything is still perfect, including the angels! As they sing on the sidelines of creation, we stand in awe and wonder. Surely the God who created such beings can do anything! His glory reverberates through the halls of eternity partly through their mighty voices.
Scripture referenced: Job 38:7
1 The Scriptures are clear that everything that exists was created by God; nothing exists that wasn’t created by Him—including angels. What I as a writer cannot be certain of, from Scriptures or commentaries, is when angels were created. Genesis 1 does not describe their creation; we only know they were watching when God created this universe. I don’t subscribe to the ‘gap theory.’ I believe our entire universe was created in 6 actual days. What I don’t claim to know is what God was doing or had done before time began.
